Research Methodology

By Allen Lee, Founder, Best Dog Insurance — Last reviewed April 2026.

Cost data

State and city average premium figures are calculated from a quote panel of major US pet insurance providers (Healthy Paws, Embrace, ASPCA, Lemonade, Pets Best, Spot, Trupanion). Standardized profile: Golden Retriever, age 2, accident + illness plan, $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement, unlimited annual limit where offered. State averages reflect the median across the panel; re-pulled quarterly and cross-referenced against state insurance department rate filings where available.

Health statistics

Breed-specific health prevalence figures come from the Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study (longitudinal cohort of 3,000+ goldens), the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) hip/elbow/cardiac databases, peer-reviewed veterinary journals indexed in PubMed (JAVMA, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Comparative Oncology), and AVMA clinical guidelines.

Provider rankings

Rankings score each insurer on five weighted dimensions: coverage breadth (30%), exclusions (25%), claims experience (20%), pricing competitiveness (15%), plan flexibility (10%). Reviewers do not see affiliate commission rates while scoring. Final scores are reviewed by a second editor before publication.

Cost calculator assumptions

Lifetime cost projections assume a 12-year average lifespan, 6% annual premium increases (NAPHIA industry inflation), one major medical event between ages 6 and 9, and routine wellness costs based on AAHA guidelines. Calculator outputs are illustrative — actual costs vary by insurer, location, and individual health.

Limitations

We do not have access to underwriting algorithms or claims data from individual insurers. Provider scores reflect publicly available policy documents, published filings, and quote panel results — not a guarantee of any specific claim outcome.

How we rank pet insurance providers

We evaluate every carrier on four primary dimensions: coverage breadth, claim payout speed, premium stability, and breed-specific coverage. Each carrier scores 1-5 on each dimension, weighted by how much it matters to a Golden Retriever owner. Reviewers don't see commission rates. Reviewers don't see who's a partner. We rebuild scores from scratch every quarter — if a top carrier slips, they slip publicly.

Scoring factors in detail

Coverage breadth asks whether the policy covers accident + illness, wellness add-ons, hereditary/congenital conditions without a rider, and whether caps are realistic for a chronic-condition Golden. Claim payout speed is measured in business days from clean submission to reimbursement: Trupanion 1-3 days (direct-pay), Healthy Paws 2-7 days, Embrace 5-10 days, Lemonade 2-5 days, Spot 5-14 days. Premium stability tracks year-over-year renewal increases at ages 3, 6, and 9. Breed-specific coverage checks hip/elbow dysplasia handling, mast-cell and hemangiosarcoma coverage, cardiac (subaortic stenosis) limits, and orthopedic surgical benefits — Goldens carry 60% lifetime cancer risk and 20.3% hip dysplasia prevalence.

Weighting

Composite: coverage breadth 30%, claim payout speed 25%, premium stability 20%, breed-specific coverage 25%. Weights reflect the NAPHIA 2025 owner survey on what Golden owners prioritize — not what makes the ranking easier to justify to an advertiser.

Update cadence

Rankings rebuilt quarterly. Off-cycle updates published when a carrier changes pricing mid-year, exits a state, when NAPHIA releases new industry data, when a state regulator opens a market conduct exam, or when a carrier changes how it handles bilateral orthopedic conditions.

Our commitment to transparency
